Isaiah 9:6

The Wonderful Counselor is here to Counsel and Comfort You

  1. Wonderful Counselor

“The perfection of this King is seen in his qualification for ruling (Wonderful Counsellor), his person and power (Mighty God), his relationship to his subjects (Everlasting Father) and the society his rule creates (Prince of Peace).” Alec Motyer

What Child Is This?

For to us a child is born - Us is the Jews - for their benefit. This child will come from the Jews and is the well-known prediction of the birth of the Messiah.

To us a son is given - God is the giver of this good gift! This description emphasizes that Messiah is a gift and that He is a male (son). While He was a Son, He was the unique, only begotten Son of God.

Wonderful
That Isaiah calls the Messiah the “Wonderful Counselor” indicates the kind of character this coming King has. The word wonderful means “incomprehensible.”

Counselor

A counselor was portrayed as a wise king, such as Solomon, giving advice, guidance or planning with his people.

“This also comes from the LORD of hosts; he is wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom.” Jesus is a wise counselor.

Jesus is a wonderful counselor. He can advise His people thoroughly because He is qualified in ways no human counselor is.

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who is every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.” Hebrews 4:15

  1. Counsel and Comfort You

Counsel You

Jesus, our Wonderful Counselor, always knows what we are going through, and He always knows the right course of action.

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” Psalm 32:8

Christ’s position as our Wonderful Counselor means we can trust Him to listen to our problems and guide us wisely and in the right direction.

“In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:6

Comfort You

We can know that as our loving counselor he:

  1. cares for us tenderly

“…casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7

  1. understands us intimately

“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:16

“Come as you are, say what you feel, ask what you need, confess your sins, your fears, your wandering thoughts and affections.” AW Pink

  1. welcomes us wholeheartedly

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, and your will fine rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

  1. desires our best

“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

Psalm 37:4

The world has rejected Jesus the Wonderful Counselor:

“Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and shrewd in their own sight.”

 Isaiah 5:21

“And this is the judgement; the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.” John 3:19

  • Conclusion

This Christmas, don’t just celebrate the birth of Christ, seek the wisdom and counsel of Jesus.
