Joel 2

Introduction

True repentance requires a heart change and
brings us into a deeper relationship with God

I. True Repentance Requires a Heart Change (v.12-17)
v.12 – “Yet even now,” declares the Lord, ‘return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning…”

When sin no longer convicts us, we should seek God, that he might restore the purity of our heart.

v.13a - “rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God”

Repentance: “Repentance is a grace of God’s Spirit whereby a sinner is inwardly humbled and visibly reformed.” Thomas Watson

Six ingredients of True Repentance:
1) Sight of Sin
2) Sorrow for Sin
3) Confession of Sin
4) Shame of Sin
5) Hatred of Sin
6) Turning from Sin

II. Brings Us into a Deeper Relationship with God (v.18-32)
v.18 – “Then the Lord became jealous for his land and had pity on his people…”
The act of God’s restoration comes as a promise to those who turn back to him. Our restoration should push us into deeper relationship with God.

We never have to think that God is done blessing us, just because we’ve endured his discipline in the past.

III. Conclusion
The purpose of blessing and meeting all our needs over abundantly is not that we get into enjoying the gifts and forget the Giver, but that we would find our joy, our fulfillment, our satisfaction in Him alone.
