Outward Expression Reflects an Inward Transformation

1. Lifting Our Hands — Surrender and Dependence

“So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.” Psalm 63:4

Lifting hands is one of the clearest physical expressions of worship in Scripture. David connected lifting his hands with blessing the name of God.

“I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling.” 1 Timothy 2:8

2. Bowing Down — Reverence and Humility

“Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!”
Psalm 95:6

The biblical idea of worship is frequently connected with bowing down. Bowing physically lowers us and acknowledges that someone else is greater. That is exactly what worship declares about God. He is God. We are not.

3. Kneeling — Submission and Prayer

“And when Solomon had finished offering all this prayer and plea to the LORD, he arose from before the altar of the LORD, where he had knelt with hands outstretched toward heaven.”

1 Kings 8:54 - Kneeling is closely connected with humility, submission, prayer, and dependence.

“At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.” Philippians 2:10

4. Standing — Honor and Readiness

“And as he opened it all the people stood.” Nehemiah 8:5

Standing can also be an expression of worship. When Ezra opened the Book of the Law before the people stood. Their standing communicated respect for the Word of God. Standing can express honor, attention, and readiness.

5. Clapping — Celebration and Joy

“Clap your hands, all peoples! Shout to God with loud songs of joy!” Psalm 47:1

Biblical worship is not always quiet and reflective. Sometimes worship erupts into celebration. Clapping is a natural expression of joy.

The important question is: “What am I celebrating?” If our clapping flows from gratitude for who God is and what He has done, the physical expression becomes an authentic response of praise.

6. Shouting — Proclaiming God's Greatness

“Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises!”
Psalm 98:4

Scripture repeatedly describes God's people lifting their voices. Some people naturally worship quietly. Others are much more expressive. Scripture gives room for both reverence and exuberance. There are moments when God's goodness deserves to be proclaimed loudly.

A shout can communicate victory, joy, confidence, and celebration. Imagine Israel seeing God deliver them. Imagine David reflecting upon God's faithfulness. Imagine the redeemed recognizing that God has rescued them.

A person can shout loudly while his heart remains far from God. Another person may worship deeply while barely making a sound. The issue is not decibels. The issue is devotion.

Our voices should proclaim what our hearts genuinely believe: “The Lord is good!” “The Lord is faithful!” “Jesus is worthy!” “Our God reigns!” The shout becomes worship when it is the overflow of a heart overwhelmed by the greatness of God.

7. Dancing — Joyful Freedom Before God

“And David danced before the LORD with all his might.” 2 Samuel 6:14

One of the most expressive pictures of worship in Scripture occurs when David brought the ark of God to Jerusalem.

“Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with tambourine and lyre!”

Psalm 149:3 - Biblical dancing in worship expresses joy, freedom, celebration, delight in God.

The Danger of Outward Worship Without Inward Reality

The Bible repeatedly warns against substituting outward religious activity for inward devotion. “This people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me.” Isaiah 29:13

This may be one of the greatest dangers in corporate worship. We learn the motions.

“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:24

That is the standard. Spirit and truth.

Authentic worship is not merely something the body does for a few minutes. It is the outward expression of a heart—and ultimately a life—that belongs completely to God.

Worship as Authentic Expression

Worship as a choice from the heart as we respond to God

 

Last week we talked about how worship is a lifestyle, and how it is a sacrifice and I reminded us that it is all about being connected to the life giver, to God. 

How we were not created to do things FOR God but to be in relationship WITH Him. To know Him and live with Him, to walk with Him!

He doesn’t first desire our service or obedience, what God first of all desires is our hearts! He wants you to know Him, He wants you to know that He loves you and that you are unique and loved unconditionally. And He wants you to love Him back!

 

First of the Ten Commandments: Deuteronomy 6:5

5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.) 

 

And we talked about how our worship is a response. A response to who Jesus is. A response to His love for us. A response to what he has done for us!

Our love for God and our worship of God is our response!

 

And today, Phil talked about how we can use our bodies to express our worship to God.

But - our arms will not lift themselves in the air. Our mouths will not open on their own, our legs won’t start dancing on their own. 

Our response is our choice. We must choose to worship! It is YOUR CHOICE if and who and how you will worship!

 

I would like to share about my journey of learning to choose to worship God.

• We have 13 acres out in Fort White and while we are incredibly grateful and excited to be blessed with such a wonderful place to call our home, it for sure comes with a lot of work. Just mowing the cleared area of the property is quite the job and takes many hours of mowing and fixing the mower in between.
• While mowing my property, I sometimes find myself just keeping going almost mindlessly.
• Most of the guys here probably know what I am talking about…
• Guys Have you ever been asked: “What are you thinking about?” and you genuinely can answer “Nothing…” ? 
• That is me at times. I simply think about nothing. 
• Or I find myself having all kinds of random thoughts, sometimes all over the place. In a way,  thinking about many things just a little bit and not even “finishing the thought”...
• Or I have songs on my mind that are mindless, random or meaningless or even sometimes ungodly…
• You see - Our thoughts can be our own but they can also be the Holy Spirit speaking to us but it can also be a demon whispering a lie or it can be our flesh demanding something or it can be us repeating memories, good or neutral or bad in our heads.
• But we do not have to just let our thoughts happen to us. We can take charge and lead them. We can decide what to do and be in charge of the inside of our heads, we can be the boss over our thoughts. The bible talks about taking our thoughts captive.

• 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

• 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 New International Version

 

• 3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

 

• Sometimes, when I catch myself being in the land of turned off brains, or in whatever thought happens or whatever song comes out is just what it is, I sometimes catch myself and I stop myself. 
• I make my mind shift gears and decide to pray, I decide to pray about whatever is on my heart or intercede for people or just simply pray in tongues. And I often sing worship songs or praise songs, I even make up my own songs sometimes and have fun with it. (Make up a silly song?)
• This completely changes the mundane work of mowing a lot of acres for many hours and I am learning to make these more and more into worship times and meaningful moments of prayer.
• And instead of being dirty from head to toe, sweaty and gross and just exhausted and on top of that empty in my heart and spirit, I find myself all of the above but instead I feel encouraged and filled.

 

• When I choose to worship, it makes a difference and changes me from the inside out.

 

• But like I said - It does not just happen on its own. I usually have to make myself do it, almost fight to do it!

 

In German we have a saying: “Es gibt nichts Gutes, außer man tut es!”

• There is nothing good, unless you do it!
• I have learned over the years that nothing good comes easy. It often requires discipline, work and training and also courage -  and the process can be uncomfortable, humbling and even painful.

1 Corinthians 9:27 

But I discipline my body and keep it under control, 

 

Worship Is Work!

It is a great thing. It is the best thing we can do!

 

• But not only is it work, it also is warfare. It is spiritual warfare. It is a powerful tool and weapon to declare the truth of God, the promises of God, the character and the beauty of God, to sing out, to speak out and to live out the word of God!

 

This is very important:

• The enemy does not want us to worship God, not with our mouths, not with our bodies, and most definitely not with our whole hearts and lives!
• When we worship God, we are making kingdom moves! We are taking a stand. We come in the opposite spirit. We push back darkness! We take territory for Jesus, we break down strongholds, we replace lies with truth. Worship literally changes the atmosphere and the spiritual climate around us and inside of us!

Walking with God is worshipping God. If we do this, we are bearers of light and we bring Jesus wherever we go! We worship and Jesus enters the stage, the spotlight is on Him!

 

But we must remember that God is not desiring for us to just do things, because what He truly desires is our hearts!

 

So often the following is true of us:

Isaiah 29:13-14 Isaiah writes: 

13 The Lord says:

“These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips,

but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.”

 

Worship is not just an external thing, like a hat that we wear or a thing that we do on Sunday but it starts from the heart.

God wants our hearts. Our worship starts with the heart!

 

Psalm 86:12

I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever.

 

Psalm 103:1

103 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!

 

Psalm 138:1

I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise;

(Leading into song “The Heart Of Worship” )

• I would like to tell you the story of the last song we will sing today. It was written by Matt Redman. 
• Matt Redman was part of a church in England. They were doing very well, part of big festivals and moves of God with thousands being touched and saved and set on fire for Jesus. 
• They had a new building and a fancy expensive sound system and rockin’ band and an up and coming famous worship leader.
• Everything was HIP and with the fancy light system creating a great atmosphere, the chairs removed and the newest songs and a focus on the cross in worship. Everything was going great and working and the props and the presentation were spot on!
• But they realized that something was not quite right, something was missing…

• Here is a quote from the pastor of that church:

 

• “Yet, we seemed to have lost the spark. We seemed to be going through the motions but I noticed that although we were singing the songs, our hearts were far from him. Was it Redman’s fault? I listened…he wasn’t singing any more duff notes than usual. Then it clicked; we had become connoisseurs of worship instead of participants of it. In our hearts we were giving the worship marks out of ten: “Not that song again”, “I can’t hear the bass”, “I like the way she sings”…We had made the band the performers of worship and ourselves the audience. We had forgotten that we are ALL the performers of worship and that God is the audience. We had forgotten that sacrifice is central to biblical worship…”

 

• He goes on explaining how Sacrifice was central to biblical worship in the old testament:

 

• “We don’t need to sacrifice sheep and goats today and certainly no sacrifice on our part can earn God’s forgiveness or our salvation; the one perfect sacrifice of Jesus on the cross has done that for all time. Yet we ARE called to bring sacrifices in worship. We are called to offer our bodies as living sacrifices – this is OUR spiritual act of worship (Romans 12:1). We are called to offer our sacrifice of praise. “

 

• This is what we talked about last week. If you missed that message, you should go back and give it a listen.
• Our worship is a sacrifice. Our lives are to be a living sacrifice, worship to God! 
• We bring God something valuable, something that costs us. Something that we walk out in obedience to His leading and nudging but also something that is simply a pouring out of our love and gratitude and adoration towards our Heavenly Father, Our creator and Savior!
• Back to the story: 
• As they realized something was up with their worship, they were asking this important question:

 

• “When I come through the door of the church, what am I bringing as my contribution to the worship?” 

 

• The big realization was that worship is not a spectator sport,  It is not about what we can get out of it; NO -  it is all about God.
• So they did a radical change - they sacked the band, sat in circles and the cue from the leadership was simply - “If no one brings a sacrifice of praise, we spend the meeting in silence”
• As you can imagine, it was very awkward at first and there was silence in the beginning. 
• The pastor shared: 

 

• “It was a very painful process. We were learning again not to rely on the music. After a while we began to have some very sweet times of worship. We all began to bring our prayers, our readings, our prophecies, our thanksgiving, our praises and our songs. Someone would start a song a cappella and we would all join in. Then someone else would take it on to another song. The excitement came back. 

• We were not having Church; we were once again meeting with God. With all the comforts stripped away we worshipped from the heart.

• When we had learnt our lesson, we brought the band back. It was at this point that Matt began to sing the song he had written out of this experience. I wept as we sang it for the first time. The words expressed exactly what was going on:”

 

• They went from “Having church”, from another thing on the calendar, an event to attend and sit through, something to give them some kind of spiritual experience; they went from all of that to meeting with God again.

 

• When they had learned their lesson, they brought the band back and our response song today that we will be singing in a minute, was written by their worship leader, Matt Redman during that time. It is the posture of the heart that God was calling that church and that movement into during that time. 
• A mindset and a heart posture of participation rather than consumption, a mindset of being prepared to meet with God and being prepared to respond and be used by God. 

 

• I am not saying we have to do or not do the same thing they did. But I am for sure saying that we need to ask ourselves a few questions:

 

 

 

• Where is my heart at? Jesus, am I burning for you, ready to follow you wherever and however?

• Am I coasting? Am I just going through the motions?

• Why am I here today? God do you have something to say to me? 

• God, do you want to say or do something through me?

• How do you want me to worship you today?

 

 

• When you and you and you and I start praying these prayers and asking these things, God loves to answer. And if we courageously take this next step in worshiping Him, we see more of the Kingdom of God manifest. It is a beautiful thing! We already have a lot of this happening here but there is SO MUCH MORE!
• Let’s ask these questions as we come back to the heart of worship today. Let’s make this not just a song, but a prayer and a commitment. Let’s not just sing but also listen as we worship Him!
