1 Thessalonians 5:12–28
Introduction
Love and Respect for Leaders and One Another is a Mark of a Healthy Church
- A Healthy Church Honors Spiritual Leadership (v.12–13)
“We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work.”
Paul describes leaders in three ways:
- Those who labor among you
- Those who are over you in the Lord
- Those who admonish you
“So I exhort the elders among you…shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you, not for shameful gain, but eagerly not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock…” 1 Peter 5:1-3
The church is called to: Esteem them highly in love – Not because they are perfect, but because of their calling. Recognize their role.
“Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.” Hebrews 13:17
Paul ends this section with a powerful command: “Be at peace among yourselves.”
- A Healthy Church Ministers to One Another (v.14–15)
“And we urge you brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.”
The work of ministry is not just for leaders—it belongs to the whole church.
Four Types of People, Four Responses
The Idle (Undisciplined) - Response: Admonish them (loving correction).
The Fainthearted - Response: Encourage them.
The Weak - Response: Help them (hold them up).
Everyone - Response: Be patient with them all.
Rejecting Retaliation
“See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good…”
In a broken world, retaliation is natural. But in the church, grace must win.
- A Healthy Church Cultivates a Godward Life (vv. 16–18)
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances…”
These three short commands form the heartbeat of Christian living.
Rejoice Always; Pray Without Ceasing; Give Thanks in All Circumstances
Why? “For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you
“Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies, but test everything…”
We “quench” the Spirit when we resist His work through disobedience and pride.
Hold Fast to What Is Good. Abstain from Every Form of Evil.
- A Healthy Church Trusts in God’s Faithful Work (vv. 23–28)
“Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely…”
God does it personally (“himself”), God does it completely, God preserves us blameless
“He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.” Your growth in holiness does not ultimately depend on your strength—but on God’s faithfulness.
Paul closes with practical relational commands:
“Brothers, pray for us.” → Mutual dependence
“Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.” → Genuine affection
“Have this letter read to all.” → Commitment to God’s Word
“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.” Grace is not just the beginning of the Christian life—it is the sustaining power of it.
Conclusion
The kind of church Paul describes is not built overnight. It is formed as ordinary believers, filled with the Spirit, take these commands seriously. And the good news: God is committed to building this kind of church. “He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.” So, we labor, we love, we pray—but ultimately, we trust!
