1 Thessalonians 3:1–13
Introduction
Because Jesus has secured our salvation, believers can endure suffering, strengthen one another, and abound in love until His return.
- The Gospel Prepares Us for Suffering (vv. 1–5)
“Therefore when we could bear it no longer, we were willing to be left behind at Athens alone, and we sent Timothy, our brother and God’s coworker in the gospel of Christ, to establish and exhort you in your faith, that no one be moved by these afflictions” (v.1–3)
Gospel of God emphasizes its origin and authority; Gospel of Christ emphasizes the One in and through Whom the good news was made available.
“establish” means to strengthen or stabilize and ‘exhort’ means to come along side
“…that no one be moved by these afflictions…”
Afflictions – (Thlipsis) means of being under pressure and was used of squeezing olives in a press to extract the oil and of squeezing grapes to extract the juice… thlipsis is most often used of outward difficulties, can be used of emotional stress.
“The gospel does not remove suffering; it transforms suffering into a pathway for faith, love, and hope.” John Piper
“For you yourselves know that we are destined for this. For when we were with you, we kept telling you beforehand that we were to suffer affliction just as it has come to pass, and just as you know.” (v.3,4)
This is a shocking statement. Suffering is not accidental—it is part of God’s sovereign plan. The Gospel reframes suffering for us, because it teaches us that suffering is not punishment, it is participation in Christ’s life.
“Christ did not die to spare us from suffering, but to give suffering meaning and victory.”
John Piper
“For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent to learn about your faith, for fear that somehow the tempter had tempted you and our labor would be in vain.” (v.5)
- The Gospel Strengthens Us Through Community (vv. 6–10)
“But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us the good news of your faith and love and reported that you always remember us kindly and long to see us, as we love to see you…” (v. 6)
Paul now shifts from anxiety to joy from Timothy’s report! Their perseverance is itself evidence of the gospel’s power. Their faith was not superficial—it was genuine.
“…for this reason, brothers, in all our distress and affliction we have been comforted about you through your faith. For now we live, if you are standing fast in the Lord.” v.7,8
“Nothing brings greater joy to a servant of God than seeing believers stand firm in their faith.” W. Wiersbe
Christian encouragement is not one-directional; it flows both ways. We strengthen one another because we share the same gospel.
“…standing fast in the Lord” – standing firm in the One who has absolute sovereign power and absolute authority!
“For what thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy that we feel for your sake before our God, as we pray most earnestly night and day that we may see you face to face and supply what is lacking in your faith” (v.9,10)
Even strong believers need continued growth. We never outgrow our need for the gospel.
III. The Gospel Establishes Us for Christ’s Return (vv. 11–13)
“Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you”
“…and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you.” (v.12)
Love is the fruit of the gospel. The gospel transforms selfish people into loving people. Faith works by love, and love proves the reality of faith.
“…so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints” (v.13)
God establishes our holiness. Jesus did not die merely to forgive us but to make us holy
Conclusion: The Gospel Sustains Us Until the End
The gospel guarantees that: Your suffering has purpose, your faith will endure, your future is secure, Christ is coming again. And because of the gospel, you will stand.
