1 Thessalonians 1:1–10
“The church at Thessalonica was a model church, not because it was big or wealthy or influential, but because it was alive with the power of the gospel.” W. Wiersbe
A Gospel Church Creates a Community of Faith, Love, and Hope
- A Gospel Church Shows Visible Transformation (v. 2–5)
Paul thanks God for their “work of faith, labor of love, and steadfastness of hope.”
These are the three enduring marks of a genuine Christian life (1 Cor. 13:13).
“Faith is a profound confidence in God that expresses itself in obedience; love is a delight in God that overflows in serving others; hope is a glad certainty about the future that enables us to endure.” John Piper
The gospel does not merely change what we believe — it changes how we live.
“For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction.”
“When God elects people, He changes them. Election is proved by transformation.”
- Weirsbe
- A Gospel Church Imitates Jesus (v. 6–7)
“You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia”
They did not come to Christ because life was easy. They came to Christ in the middle of suffering. The gospel gave them something stronger than fear, joy in the Holy Spirit.
“The Thessalonians did not choose Christ because it was convenient; they chose Him because He was true.” Kent Hughes
When Jesus becomes your greatest treasure, even suffering cannot steal your joy.
Their joyful endurance made them an example to believers everywhere. The gospel doesn’t make life easier — it makes life meaningful.
- A Gospel Church Becomes a Gospel-Witness Church (v. 8-10)
“For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere…For they themselves report we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.”
Their faith “sounded forth” like a trumpet. Their conversion story: they “turned from idols to serve the living God and to wait for his Son from heaven.”
The Thessalonians were not trained missionaries. They were new believers. But when Jesus captured their hearts, they could not stop talking about Him.
“your work of faith” “you turned to God from idols”
“your labor of love” “to serve the living and true God”
“and patience of hope” “to wait for His Son from heaven”
Paul summarizes their conversion: “You turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God.” That is repentance. The gospel not only adds Jesus to your life, but it also replaces what once ruled it.
An idol is anything you trust, love, or serve more than God.
They now wait: “for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.”
Their hope was not in Rome, money, or safety — it was in a risen and returning Savior.
The gospel is not just that Christ died, but that Christ reigns
Paul reminds them that ‘Jesus delivers us from the wrath to come’ meaning there is a wrath coming! If you have not repented and put your trust in Jesus, you will experience the WRATH of God!
