Luke 2:29–32
Introduction
God Fulfills His Promises Even When Waiting Seems Long
- A Song of Peace
Simeon begins not with a declaration about himself, but a prayer to God: “Lord…”
‘Lord’ is not the usual kurios but despotes that speaks of the supreme power of God, and of the relation of a slave to his master because of purchase. The despotes was one who has legal control and authority over persons, such as slaves (2 Peter 2:1,2; Titus 1:4).
- The Peace That Comes From Fulfilled Promise
“according to your word.” Every word, every prophecy, every covenant—all fulfilled in Christ.
“Simeon’s song teaches us that the fulfillment of God’s promises brings profound peace. God had spoken, and now He had acted; Simeon’s faith had become sight.” K. Hughes
- The Peace That Frees Us From the Fear of Death
“Jesus did not come to make death gentle; he came to make death irrelevant—to destroy it. He came so that those who believe in him will say with Simeon, ‘I am ready to depart in peace, for my eyes have seen your salvation.’” John Piper
- The Peace That Comes From Seeing Christ
Peace is not the absence of trouble. Peace is the presence of Jesus.
- A Song of Salvation
“for my eyes have seen your salvation…”
“The essence of Christmas is that God came to save us not by sending merely a message but by sending Himself. Salvation is not mainly something Jesus brings; it is something Jesus is.” John Piper
“…that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples…”
“The birth of Christ is not God’s reaction; it is God’s intention—His eternal plan, prepared from before the foundation of the world, now revealed in plain sight for all the world to see.” Kent Hughes
If Simeon could depart in peace after seeing one moment of the story, how much more should we, who see its fullness, rejoice!
- A Song for the Nations
“…a Light for Revelation to the Gentiles…”
“Christmas is God’s invasion of enemy territory. The light has come into the world, and it will not be overcome. The birth of Jesus is the dawn of global hope.” John Piper
“…and for Glory to Your People Israel.”
“Israel finds her glory not in what she achieved but in what God brought forth from her—a Savior whose glory illuminates the whole world.” Kent Hughes
In this one verse: Jew and Gentile are united, Israel’s Messiah becomes the world’s Redeemer, Ethnic, cultural, and national barriers collapse in Christ.
We celebrate not only that the Light came to us, but that the Light shines through us.

Conclusion: Can You Sing Simeon’s Song?
