Colossians 1:9-14

Introduction

“Paul’s prayer life was driven by the glory of Christ. His petitions for believers were not shaped by their immediate circumstances but by the eternal purposes of God in Christ Jesus.” Kent Hughes

Prayer is to be Gospel Centered and Life Focused

  1. The Prayer for Knowledge (v. 9)

“We have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding.”

In the NT epignosis often refers to knowledge which very powerfully influences the form of one's spiritual life not just intellectual understanding.

  1. Knowledge That Saturates
  1. Knowledge That is Spiritual
  2. Knowledge of His Will That Leads to Walking

"The end of all knowledge is conduct." BJ Lightfoot

  1. The Call to a Worthy Walk (vv. 10–11)

“so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy…”

The Christian life is pictured as a walk—step by step, directionally aligned with Christ.

  1. Bearing Fruit (v. 10a)

“The authentic Christian life is not static; it is dynamic, fruitful, and productive for God’s glory.” Kent Hughes

  1. Growing in Knowledge (v. 10b)
  2. Strengthened by Power (v. 11a)
  1. Enduring with Joy (v. 11b)

“The gospel gives us a pair of glasses that enable us to interpret all of reality differently. We can face suffering with joy not because suffering is good, but because Christ has already secured our good in Him.” Tim Keller

III. The Ground of Thanksgiving (vv. 12–14)

“Giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

  1. Qualified by the Father (v. 12)
  1. Delivered from Darkness (v. 13a)
  1. Transferred to the Son’s Kingdom (v. 13b)
  1. Redeemed and Forgiven (v. 14)

“We were not just rescued from something but transferred into Someone—the kingdom of Christ Himself. Redemption is not merely release, but relocation into His rule of love.” Kent Hughes

Conclusion

That is the heartbeat of Colossians 1:9–14. Because we are loved and accepted in Christ, we now live lives that are worthy of Him, strengthened by Him, and thankful to Him.
