1 Corinthians 15:1-11
Introduction
“We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet at the very same time, we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope.” Tim Keller
Scripture insists that the gospel is not merely the starting line; it is the race itself. We never outgrow our need for the gospel. We live in it, grow through it, and are sustained by it.
“The gospel is not just the ABCs of the Christian life, but the A to Z. We are not justified by the gospel and then sanctified by obedience, but the gospel is the way we grow and are renewed.” Tim Keller
- The Gospel Reminds Us of Our Identity
“Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved.” 1 Corinthians 15:1-2
The gospel declares that our identity is not in our performance, but in Christ’s finished work.
“To live by the gospel means that we live every day in light of the gospel truths that we are accepted by God through Christ and not on the basis of our performance.” J Bridges
“We need the gospel every day of our lives, because we are prone to forget that we are accepted through Christ alone.” Jerry Bridges
- The Gospel Renews Us in Grace
“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives.” Titus 2:11,12
“We never get beyond the gospel in our Christian life to something more ‘advanced.’ The gospel is not the first step in a stairway of truths, but more like the hub in a wheel of truth.” Tim Keller
“Your worst days are never so bad that you are beyond the reach of God’s grace. And your best days are never so good that you are beyond the need of God’s grace.” J.B.
- The Gospel Reorients Our Mission
“For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all… that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.” 2 Corinthians 5:14,15
The gospel not only saves us but also sends us. Our mission flows from the gospel!
We are not motivated by guilt, fear, or duty, but by love. The gospel shapes not only who we are but also what we do. It calls us to mission, service, generosity, and witness.
“The gospel produces love, humility, and service rather than fear, pride, and selfishness. The gospel changes what we do, but it first changes why we do it.” Tim Keller
“The gospel is not only the most important message in all of history; it is the only essential message in all of history. Yet we allow thousands of professing Christians to live their entire lives without clearly understanding it.” Jerry Bridges
Conclusion: Never Move Beyond the Cross
The gospel is not only the way into the Christian life but the way of the Christian life. It reminds us of our identity, renews us in grace, and reorients us toward mission.
“We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet at the very same time, we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope.” Tim Keller
Reflection Questions
How often do I consciously remind myself of the gospel?
In what areas of my life am I tempted to live by performance instead of grace?
Who in my life needs to hear the gospel through my words and actions this week?
How can I make gospel truths the foundation of my joy, obedience, and hope?
