 Acts 2:42–47

 Introduction

The Spirit Forms the Church as a United Body,

bringing Believers Together in Shared Life and Mission

I.       They Desired to Grow in God (v.42)

v.42 - “…they devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and the fellowship to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”

Devoted - It describes a steadfast single-minded fidelity to a certain course of action

“Let the word of God dwell in your richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” Colossians 3:16

“Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation – if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.” 1 Peter 2:2

Where the Spirit of God reigns, a love for God’s Word reigns!

“The Spirit of God leads the people of God to submit to the Word of God.”  J Stott

Do we hunger for the Word of God? What we believe will determine how we live!

II.               They Loved One Another (v.42b)

v.42   …to the fellowship…(koinonia)

Our first priority is to have fellowship with God and then out of a natural overflow we will fellowship with one another.

“…that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed, our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.” 1 John 1:3

“…to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”

Breaking of bread - can refer to communion together since Jesus instituted it with the disciples at the Last Supper. But it can also mean having a meal together.

  • They Feared God and Experienced Him (v.43-45)

v.43 – “And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles…”

v.44.45 – “And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all as any had need.”   The early church shared among themselves.

Koinonia expresses itself through giving. It is giving of yourself and your resources. It is sacrificing for another!

IV.            It was a Worshipping Church (v.46-47a)

v.46,47 – “And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people.”

We don’t want to be meeting oriented, but relationally oriented.

 V.              It was an Evangelistic Church (v.47b)

  1. 47 – “and the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”

Acts 18:9-11 & Romans 10:14

WE MUST PROCLAIM THE MESSAGE OF SALVATION TO THE WORLD!

“pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ” Colossians 4:3
