Introduction
Psalm 19:7-14
God’s Word is Sufficient for Everything We Need in Life
- Sufficiency of Scripture Defined
The Sufficiency of Scripture is the idea that the Bible contains all the words of God that are needed for salvation, godliness and living the Christian life.
I have found is that books can inform; but only the Bible can transform.
- Sufficiency of Scripture Applied
Scripture is sufficient for knowing God and Salvation
To say the Scriptures are sufficient means that the Bible is all we need to equip us for a life of faith and service.
“See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ” Colossians 2:8
The Bible is all that is necessary for the believer to understand the character of God, the nature of man, sin, heaven, hell, and salvation through Jesus Christ.
Paul’s words to the Galatians indicate the seriousness of delivering a message outside the Bible: “If we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!” Galatians 1:8
Scripture is sufficient for Godliness and Christian practice
Scripture offers principles which guide believers in their day to day lives.
But the principle of sufficiency is clear: Scripture provides fully adequate and sufficient general principles which can be applied in specific ethical situations.
“His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities, you will never fall.” 2 Peter 1:3-10
“And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.” Mark 7:20-23
- Conclusion
God’s Word is Sufficient for Everything We Need in Life
