November 17, 2024 Preacher: Rick Applegate Series: Guarding The Gospel

Topic: The Word Of God Scripture: 2 Timothy 3

You Need The Bible More Than You Think

Focus Point: The Word of God is your help, protection, your very life. Avail
yourself to God’s provision.

The Negative – vv.1-9
• The last days began from the time of Christ’s first arrival, until His second
appearing.
• “Times of difficulty” is better translated as fierce.

19 characteristics of “terrible times”
1. Depravation – vv.2-6 (the list)

2. Deception – vv.7-8a
• Deceiving others.

3. Damnation – vv.8b-9
• At some point, God exposes them as frauds.

The Positive – vv.10-17
• Three examples of Scripture being breathed out by God:
1. Heb. 4:12 “The word of God is living and active...”
2. Gen. 2:7 “the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and
breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living
creature.”
3. John 1:1,14 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.” “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”

• God’s word, Jesus, doesn’t just want to connect with us, He wants to
CHANGE us!

1. Scripture’s Profitability.
• Salvation
Rom. 10:17 “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”
• Sanctification
• Teaching:
▪ Reproof: pointing out you are going the wrong way!
▪ Correction: that’s the wrong way, here is the right way!
▪ Training: this is how to walk it out.

2. Scripture’s Protection.
• Protection during persecution.
3. Scripture’s Imperative.
• Our responsibility is to continue to seek, dig into and cry out!
• God’s promise is to reveal, give wisdom and change us into His image!

Application Questions
• Do you see the absolute necessity of Scripture directing your life?
• Do you see Jesus as the living word of God?
• Do you have a relationship with Scripture? If not, remember Scripture is living,
breathing and active.
