Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Introduction

Let’s Show Our Children How to Live Passionately for God

“Hear, O Israel: ‘The Lord our God, the LORD is one.”

The Shema is direct refutation of the polytheistic pagan worship in all the nations that surrounded them, for in the Shema they affirmed that the is only ONE true and living God.

  1. Love God (v.4-6)

“You shall love the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul and all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.”

The first responsibility of a Parent is their relationship with God.

A parent must love God first and foremost before they can properly love their family. Our goal as parents is NOT to raise just good moral children, but children who are passionate about their relationship with God!

  1. Teach God (v.7)

The second responsibility of a Parent is to teach their children about God and the relationship they have with Him.

“You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when your rise.”

Teach diligently means to sharpen, to pierce

It is the responsibility of parents to pass on lifestyle faith. This emphasis on parental responsibility is repeated in Proverbs 22:6.

The church cannot  and should not take the place of parental training, but it surely can supplement it!

III. Live for God (v.8,9)

The final responsibility of a Parent from this passage is that we are to live for God. We just don’t teach it, but we live it before them.

“You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”
