Exodus 1,2
Introduction

God is Faithful to His Promises and His People

I. Faithful Women (Ch. 1)
v.8 – “Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.”
a. Pharaoh’s Fear (v.9-11)

i. Too many Israelites and fear that they may join their enemies
ii. Put them in slavery, but yet they still multiplied and Egyptians dread
iii. Covert genocide – Pharaoh instructs midwives to kill male
children
iv. Overt genocide – Pharaoh commands to throw Hebrew
males in the Nile

b. Midwives Fear (v.17)

i. They feared God rather than Pharaoh (Fear of Man vs Fear of God)
ii. Their response to Pharaoh v.18-20
iii. God blesses the midwives with children
iv. Notes: Their names are mentioned and not Pharaoh.
“Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.”
Proverbs 29:25
“Blessed is the one who fears the Lord always, but whoever hardens his heart will fall
into calamity.” Proverbs 28:14
“It would be better to be a Hebrew midwife than to be Pharaoh.” Chuck Swindoll
Chapter 1 ends with things looking really bad and hopeless. But Chapter 2 begins with a
plan for hope and deliverance!

II. Faithful Family (2:1-10)
God preserves Moses!
a. Moses’s Parents: Amaram and Jochebed – they are a believing family (Ex. 6:20)

i. Children – Miriam (2:4), Aaron (Ex.7:7) and Moses
ii. His parents are mentioned in Hall of Faith (Hebrews 11:23)

b. Moses’s Mother and Sister

i. Saw he was a ‘fine child and hid him 3 months’
ii. Makes a ‘basket’ with bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and
pitch – basket same Hebrew word as ‘Ark’ from Noah in Genesis
iii. Sister follows basket and encourages Pharaoh’s daughter
iv. Pharaoh’s Daughter disobedience – this is HUGE!
v. Moses name – “Because, I drew him out of the water.”

c. Moses Murders, Flees and Marries (2:11-22)

i. Moses sees abuse of his people, he kills an Egyptian and when
Pharaoh hears of this – he wants to kill Moses – Moses flees
ii. Moses lands in Midian where shepherds came and drove out the
daughters of Reuel and their sheep. But Moses fights them off and
waters their flock.
iii. The daughters tell their father what Moses did and he
offered Moses the chance to eat with him and stay there.
Eventually he gave Moses his daughter Zipporah and they have a
son Gershom.
iv. Moses feels separation from his people: the Israelites in the
naming of his son – ‘I have been a sojourner in a foreign land.’

III. Faithful God (2:23-25)
v.23 – “During those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel groaned
because of their slavery and cried out for help. Their cry for rescue from slavery came
up to God. And God heard their groaning and God remembered his covenant with
Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. God saw the people of Israel – and God knew.”
a. The Focus Shifts Back to Israel

i. Moses’ life now summarized, focus shifts back to Israel
ii. Pharoah has died, Moses now can return not as a criminal, but as a
Prophet of God
iii. God hears their prayers and remembers His covenant
iv. God is beginning the process of deliverance, and the life of
Moses and the lives of Israel is about to change.
b. The Focus Is on God’s Providence and Will Move to God’s Power
IV. Conclusion
