John 11:17-27
Introduction

The Resurrection of Jesus Changes EVERYTHING!

I. Do We Believe Jesus is Alive
v.17 – John opens with the comment that Lazarus had been dead for 4 days!
What distinguishes Jesus from other religious martyrs is the resurrection. Many
have claim to be God, but no one except Jesus rose from the dead.
v.25,26 - I AM the Resurrection and Life
Jesus is the resurrection – “though he die, yet shall he live”
Jesus is the life – “everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die”
Jesus doesn’t say simply “I give resurrection and life” he says, I AM resurrection
and life.”
“Jesus’ concern is to divert Martha’s focus from an abstract belief in what takes place on the last day, to a personalized belief in him who alone can provide it. Just as he not only gives the bread from heaven (6:27) but is himself the bread of life (6:35), so also he not only raises the dead on the last day (5:21, 25ff.) but is himself the resurrection and the life. There is neither resurrection nor eternal life outside of him.” DA Carson
Do you believe this?
The resurrection of Jesus demands a response; there are implications that
cannot be ignored.
v.27
I believe: reflects the state of her confident trust. Her faith is a rich mixture of personal trust (fiducia) and of confidence that certain things about Jesus are true:
1) that he is the Christ
2) that he is the Son of God
3) that he is the one who was to come into the world.
“The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.” John 1:9
“When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world.” John 6:14

II. Do We Live Like Jesus is Alive
Through the resurrection:
we are made ‘whole and complete’ our sins have been forgiven and we have
victory of sin
we can have a personal and full relationship with God (just like Adam and Eve
before the fall) we can experience and enjoy fellowship with God NOW! We are children of God we have a future hope, we don’t fear death b/c we will spend eternity with him “And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power.” 1 Cor. 6:14
“…knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence.” 2 Cor. 4:14 we have a mission – spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to all peoples “When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me saying, ‘Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one, I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys to Death and Hades.”
Revelation 1:17,18
