2 Timothy 1:3-10
Introduction
Because of the Resurrection of Jesus, We have Victory Over Fear
I. Timothy’s Background and Influence (v.3-5)
1) Godly Home
Timothy was raised in a godly home. Luke tells us that he was the son of a mixed
marriage, in that his father was Greek and his mother Jewish (Acts 16:1).
2) Spiritual Discipleship
Spiritual Disciple of Paul – the bond and friendship they had for one another.
3) The Gift of God
v.6 – “For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you
through the laying on of my hands…”
II. Victory Over Fear (v.6-7)
v.7 – “for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control…”
Negative side:
God has not given us a spirit of fear
“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received
the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, Abba, Father!” Romans 8:15
Positive side:
God has given us a Spirit of Power
God has given us a Spirit of Love
God has given us a Spirit of Self-control
Either way, fear is displaced by vastly superior qualities that can not only lift Timothy
out of his mire but equip him to be of service to those who look to him (as Timothy looks
to Paul) for pastoral direction

III. Power of Resurrection (v.8-10)
v.8 – “Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his
prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God…”
Paul wants Timothy to not be ashamed of God or of Paul. But he wants Timothy to
follow in his steps of suffering for the gospel.

v.9,10 – “…who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but
because of his own purpose and grace which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the
ages began, and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior
Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the
gospel…”
The power of the resurrection enables us to defeat fear in our lives. Fear is a hindrance
to God’s power in our lives.
Living Fear Free Lives:
1) Remember what Jesus has done for you (he saved you)
2) Remember the power that Jesus gave you (he rose from the dead)
3) Remember Jesus promise of the Holy Spirit in our lives (He dwells in us)
4) Remember God’s Word and live by it (we can overcome through it)
‘Faith is not a blind leap into the dark. Faith is believing the principles of God’s Word
and ordering our life accordingly.” Ed Hindson
