1 Peter 3:1-7
Introduction

Marriage is great and difficult which is why we need Jesus

I. The High Calling for Wives (v.1-6)
“Likewise…in the same way…” refers back to the previous verses of Christians being
subject to human institutions and slaves being subject to their masters, BUT it also
refers back to Jesus Christ and his response to authority.
“wives, be subject to your own husbands…”
Be subject - to put oneself under another, not because of inferiority, but because of
God’s willed order. Submission is the attitude and action of willingly yielding to and
obeying the authority of another to please the Lord.
“to your own husband” – not to men in general; the only other place for submission
outside of marriage is the local church pastors
1b,2 – “so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by
the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct.”
v.3,4 – “gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious”
“Gentle” is the word sometimes translated “meek.” It is used of Jesus. It does not mean
weakness, rather strength under control.

“Quiet” does not mean mute, but rather tranquil or calm, not combative.
A quiet woman exudes a confidence in her role and giftedness. She is not out to prove
v.5 – “For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by
submitting to their own husbands…”
"Is anything too difficult for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, at this
time next year, and Sarah shall have a son." Genesis 18:14
v.6 – “as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do
good and do not fear anything that is frightening.”
Christian women have become the offspring of Sarah, spiritually speaking, and
continually do what is right without fear of what their husbands might do.
When our lives honor Christ, even silence is powerful and speaks volumes

II. The High Calling for Husbands (v.7)
Understanding Way
Understanding your wife involves developing and maintaining togetherness in your
marriage.
Understanding your wife involves knowing her well.
Understanding your wife involves knowing God and His truth well.
Show Honor
Husbands are to honor their wives
Weaker Vessel –
The wife is NOT in ANY WAY inferior but that she is physically weaker, and in need of
protection, provision, and strength from her husband.
III. Conclusion
The result of understanding and honoring your wife will be an effective prayer life.
