Genesis 1:26; Romans 1

Introduction

God created male and female, embrace it and find your identity in Him

The Shift
Daniel Heimbach in his book identifies shifts in the church’s thinking about God and sexuality as a result of humanistic influences:

“There is a shift from making sure that sexual expression is consistent with the character of God, to making sure the character of God is consistent with sexual experience…”

“There is a shift from interpreting sex according to the Bible, to interpreting the Bible according to sex…”

“There is a shift from thinking sexual desires need to be disciplined because human nature is fallen, to thinking sexual desires should be unrestrained because there is nothing wrong with human nature…”

“There is a shift from worshipping a God who became flesh, to worshipping flesh that becomes God…”

“God did in fact make us male and female. To deny this is to deny what it means to be human…male and female designate the fundamental distinction that God has embedded in the very biology of the race…their differences are rooted in sexual categories that have been ordained and created by God.” Denny Burk

The Issue
Is our sexuality or biological sex binary or on a spectrum?

Matthew 19:3-6; 10-12

A eunuch in Jesus’s day was not someone who was sexless but someone who lacked the ability to procreate. Jesus gives us 3 types of eunuchs:

Those who were ‘born that way’
Those who were made ‘eunuchs by men’
Those who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven

All 3 categories of eunuchs are viewed as males, not as ambiguously sexed. They don’t stop being males because of a disorder of sex development!

The Answer
“Christians must understand that the design for gender and sexuality in Scripture is the design that all humans are obligated to live within, even if they do not appear most the natural or easiest in light of sin…The Bible understands gender and sexuality as creational realities that determine whether a society will organize itself in subjection to God’s authority or in rejection to God’s authority.” Andrew Walker

God created
God created humanity
God created humanity in his likeness
God created humanity male and female
God created male and female for one another

The Gospel – Good News
The gospel empowers Christians to live in accord with the biblical vision for gender and sexuality taught in Genesis.

The gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ calls us to glorify God with our bodies because they were purchased by Him (1 Corinthians 6:20).

We are called to honor the Lord Jesus and to submit to Him our sexual desires as well as our conduct (Matt. 5:28; Gal. 5:19–21; Eph. 4:22–24; Col. 3:5; 1 Thess. 4:1–8).

We are to flee all forms of sexual morality (1 Cor. 6:18; Eph. 5:3–5; 1 Thess. 4:1–8).

We embrace appropriate gender norms so as not to scandalize or give offense with impropriety of gender expression (Deut. 22:5; 1 Cor. 6:9; 11:3–16; 1 Tim. 2:9).

Christians believe that we are not our own, and that we owe every facet of our existence—our gender expression and our sexuality—to Jesus Christ (Col. 1:15–20).

Conclusion
“A vision for gender and sexuality that fails to satisfy the demands set forth in Genesis will be subject to endless redefinition, which is why revisionist accounts of gender and sexuality—such as same-sex marriage and gender fluidity—retain no coherent limiting principle.” Andrew Walker
